Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is long-term inflammation of the bronchi, two large tubes that carry air from your windpipe to your lungs. Chronic bronchitis can also lead to other health problems, such as heart failure and lung cancer. If you smoke, the best thing you can do for your health is to quit. People with chronic bronchitis can also have episodes of acute bronchitis which is usually caused by a viral infection. This means that antibiotics will not help treat the infection. If you have chronic bronchitis, talk to our doctors about ways to treat it and prevent it from getting worse.

Diagnosing Chronic Bronchitis

Diagnosing
Chronic Bronchitis

Diagnosis for chronic bronchitis can include the following procedures: pulmonary function tests, by using a spirometer device your doctor can measure the lungs’ ability to move air in and out of your lungs. Use of a peak flow monitor, this test measures the fastest speed you can blow air out of your lungs. Additional tests can include arterial blood gas tests, pulse oximetry tests, chest x-rays, or CT scans. All of these tests can help your doctor determine the severity of your chronic bronchitis and rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.

Symptoms of
Chronic Bronchitis

Bronchitis often causes a cough that lasts for weeks or months. You may also have chest discomfort, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Most cases of bronchitis are caused by viruses and will go away on their own within a few weeks. However, if you have chronic bronchitis, you may need treatment to help clear up the infection and ease your symptoms. Treatment for chronic bronchitis usually includes antibiotics to kill the bacteria, if it is caused by bacteria, and medicines to relieve congestion and coughing.
